The Churchill Downs Experience (more tame than the KY Derby)

As most of you may know, I recently moved to Louisville! Steven helped me move down and we made a trip to the bourbon distilleries, Lincoln's Boyhood home, and Churchill Downs and had a great time. Now that Hanley Central is working, I figured I should start contributing.
For those of you who don't know, Churchill Downs is the sight of the Kentucky Derby each May. There are three sides to the Derby: 1) The infamous wild infield...Described as Kentucky's Mardi Gras, and quite a unique experience 2) The sun dresses, big hats, and elegant side, or 3) Sit at home and watch the best 2 minutes in a horse race....Plus more...the mint juleps, festivals, twin spires, and the history.

It's a fun place to go and bet on horses, Steve and I had, and I try to do more often when there are races. Even the most simple 2$ bet turns into a good time, even when you win big on an accidental bet. (hehe, that was fun!)
As a recent work outing, we went to the track in Millionaire's Row (Yes, I actually have fun at work and work outings! I even learned to sail at one a few weeks ago!) We ate lunch and made bets in the same room where Queen Elizabeth stayed this past Derby! I could feel the British Royalty rubbing off on me, and came out winning a few dollars by the end of the day. Hopefully y'all can enjoy the pictures and get an experience for yourself. Else, you might actually have to come visit me some day!

The view up there is quite amazing, and more pictures can be seen in the link below:

Kevin, Deb, Kim, and David back from the river
I will christen my first ever bog entry by saying this is a great idea.
We had perfect weather every day up at the river. David rode his bike around the Wakeley Lake area and discovered a path that comes right down to Goodar road. So Kevin and I took a hike in to the lake from the cabin. It is an hour and 50 minute hike in to the lake. I can't believe we have been going up there for all these years and never knew you could walk right in from the cabin!
Kevin and I were almost run over in the crosswalk in downtown Gaylord. I injured my hand pretty badly as Kevin pulled me out of the way of the van. We were so shaken by the incident that we left after reporting it at the police station. We weren't going to report it, because the van sped away and we didn't have any information. But, a woman who was at the stop light was so alarmed by it that she chased the vehicle and got the license number. Then she tracked Kevin and I down later and handed us the information. I am glad she did, because I felt better afterwards. They were able to track to vehicle to a local health supply business and they were going to pay the business a visit.
Kim and Derek were up for a short time, then they headed off to Chicago for Lallapalooza (sp?). Derek brought paint ball up and he and David and David's friends seemed to have a blast in the 90+ heat. David had friends from high school and friends from college up. I am not used to cooking for large crowds (and large boys), but I managed. David fly fished for the first time. By the way he has been fishing every week this summer with friends after work. Now he can add fly fishing to his repertoire.
As usual, we took no pictures or video the entire time. It is unfortunate that we have no shutter bugs in our group. Just imagine everyone relaxing, reading a lot, kayaking, shooting archery, going on walks, watching the canoe race, fly fishing, biking, running, sewing, playing Euchre, playing paintball, oh and golfing.
When we returned to Kalamazoo yesterday, we discovered deer had eaten every tomato and leaf off our one tomato plant, as well as every leaf off every hosta in our garden. Compared to years past, we got off easy.
